The silent, ongoing genocide against the people of Western Tigray..!!

A forsaken child, dead, eaten by a hyena!

A searing indictment of human failure!

Naod Haileselasie was barely 2 years old, his life a fleeting shadow in the dust of an IDP makeshift camp in Mekele. Yesterday, in the cruel hours before dawn, a darkness more tangible than the night descended. A hyena slipped into the camp and stole him from his parents’ side, pulling the child away amidst his mother’s desperate, splintered screams.

Naod was living in that fragile encampment with his mother, IDPs who had fled the horrific massacre (ethnic cleansing) in Western Tigray five long years ago. They escaped the bullets and the atrocities, believing the camp offered a final, if meager, sanctuary. They traded a brutal war for a brutal waiting – a relentless cycle of anxiety, hunger, and now, the ultimate terror.

Imagine the dawn that broke for Naod’s mother: a mother’s hand reaching for her child, finding only a cold, empty space. The grief is not a private sorrow; it is a public wound that exposes the raw, unhealed failure of peace.

Even after the Pretoria CoHA, a document meant to usher in an era of relief and return, the displaced people of Western Tigray are still enduring unimaginable ordeals. They are trapped between a fragile truce and a devastating reality where displacement equals destitution, and the simplest need, safety, is denied, even to the innocent children.

This is not merely a tragedy; it is an outrage against the dignity of life. When a child seeking refuge is killed by a wild animal while under the supposed protection and the oversight of the global community, it means the system has collapsed.

To the IC: We must confront this truth. The CoHA can’t be a license for complacency. The people of Western Tigray need more than abstract agreements; we need concrete action!

We demand:

1. Safe and immediate return to our rightful homes.

2. Humanitarian oversight.

3. Investigation of all the horrific crimes committed.

The world must speak up for humanity!

Rest in peace to the little angel and our deepest condolences to the entire family.
